www.walksworldwide.com As Romania joins the EU, Walks Worldwide are offering an opportunity to explore the country’s pastoral landscapes during an 8-day guided trek that follows the Carpathian Mountains in Moldavia and crosses into Transylvania via dramatic passes and ridges in the Borgo Mountains - favourite haunt of Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula! departing London 18th August 2007.
The first day is spent exploring Bucharest, before taking first class rail sleepers to Bucovina in northern Romania.
A road transfer through the picturesque Zugreni Gorge leads to the start of the trek in the Rarau Mountains. From here, the walk follows the mountain ridge with panoramic views at 1600 metres before descending through Slatioara Ancient Forest to the first jewel in Bucovina's treasures - Voronet Monastery and its beautifully preserved exterior frescoes.
Travelling on, pass through remote communities where wooden houses cling to the ridges, the descent is through the Obcina Mare Mountains to Moldovita Monastery. Next day, there is a trek through timeless forest in the Obcina Feredeu Mountains to reach Lake Iezeru, then a hike through meadows to Floarea ('flower') Peak.
In Floarea there is a visit to the Sheepfold to witness local shepherds going about their daily tasks. Sampling the local produce makes a welcome diversion, before ascending over Ardeloaia Ridge to the village of Breaza.
In Transylvania, there are fantastic views all round before ascending the Transylvanian Alps to reach Omu Peak (1932 metres) and continuing along the ridges of Suhard and Borgo Mountains.
The final descent is through the Maria Mare Valley to a comfortable lodge, with a delicious dinner and relaxation in the indoor pool and jacuzzi! The tour concludes with the overnight train back to Bucharest.
