North Cyprus Shows Great Promise

www.walksworldwide.com Whilst some holiday destinations ‘could do better’ and others, more worryingly, ‘fail to meet the required standard’, North Cyprus, tipped to be the destination for 2008, with its untouched beaches, legendary hospitality and near perfect climate, ‘shows great promise’. Walks Worldwide’s brand new walking holiday in North Cyprus offers a breath of fresh Mediterranean air to stressed-out teachers looking for an Easter break! 8-day self-drive tours depart daily. While the south of the island may have lost much of its charm through being victim of its own commercial success, North Cyprus still maintains the epitome of the old-style Med with unspoilt beaches of the Karpaz Peninsula stretching for miles, azure seas, ancient cities packed with antiquities, craggy mountains adorned with byzantine/crusader castles and lowlands bursting with rare birds, butterflies and wildflowers. On arrival on the island guests are transferred to their holiday base, a pretty boutique hotel high in the hills overlooking the beautiful Venetian port of Girne (Kyrenia). The hotel is just minutes from the quaint community of Bellapais, where Lawrence Durell lived whilst writing ‘Bitter Lemons’, and features a pool, bar and restaurant serving delicious organic cuisine. There are plenty of walking opportunities from the hotel doorstep including explorations of the dramatic Kyrenia Mountain range and following the cobbled crusader path to Bellapais Abbey. A hire car offers guests the freedom to travel further afield, meandering between ancient villages, stopping at deserted beaches and visiting numerous archaeological sites dating back as far as 11,000 years from Neolithic to Egyptian and Ottoman periods. Historic sites of particular interest include the mediaeval castles of Buffavento, Kantara and St Hilaron together with the Persian town of Vouni, the Roman city of Salamis and the 12th century frescoes at Antiphonitis. North Cyprus is a million miles away from your average Mediterranean holiday destination and being outside the Euro-zone, it represents excellent value-for-money too!
Low cost flights operate to North Cyprus from London.
