In the largest city Auckland, it is possible to explore extinct volcanoes, incredible landforms scattered with unique fiery Pohutukawa and Kauri trees, and the magnificent coastline of the Coromandel Peninsula.
After driving to Tongariro NP, it is possible to pause in Waimangu Thermal Valley and wander along crater walkways and view elemental volcanic activity and thermally adapted plants.
New Zealand has many ancient battle sites, the local marae (sacred meeting area) and sacred Mt Pihanga. The Tongariro Trek is through more volcanoes, pristine rainforest, sparkling emerald lakes and waterfalls. There is time to marvel at Rotorua, centre of geo-thermal activity and Maori culture, before leaving for South Island.
At Fox Glacier there is the sensation of walking on ice with crampons. The trek includes a flight to remote Mt Aspiring Park and walk through Siberia Valley, before returning to civilisation by jet boat.
