www.timesofoman.com Oman’s tourism industry is set to scale new peaks. “In both developed and developing countries, tourism has already been recognised as one of the key components of economic development.
In the next five years, the domestic tourism industry will witness remarkable growth, and is expected to record an average seven per cent growth,†Dr Rajiha bint Abdul Amir bin Ali, minister of tourism, told the Times of Oman.
Projects such as Blue City, The Wave and Muriya are all set to take Oman’s tourism industry to new heights, and will contribute to tourism development considerably, which is collectively sustainable.
The recently set up star hotel Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah attracts a large number of local and foreign tourists.
“The government’s policies clearly indicate that the tourism sector would continue to receive enormous support from the government. Tourism development, as in many countries, will create employment opportunities for nationals  directly and indirectly.
“As far as Omanisation is concerned, in the next 10 years or so, the sector may achieve at least 80 per cent Omanisation.
“Tourism is a major catalyst for preservation and development of the environment. Tourism now accounts for less than one per cent of Oman’s GDP. By 2020, the sector will emerge as one of the significant contributors to the country’s GDP,†the minister said.
The government has estimated private sector investments of RO958 million in the tourism sector for the current Five-Year (2006-2010) Plan. Investments in residential and other projects are estimated at RO2.7 billion. Private sector projects in gas-based industrial projects are estimated at RO1.4 billion. All these investments, directly or indirectly, will give a big boost to the Omani tourism industry. |
