Khaleej Times: A prestigious museum to showcase the rich archeological, cultural and maritime heritage of the Sultanate of Oman is openin in Salalah, where the Khareef Festival is in full swing.
The museum, known as The Frankincense Land Museum, is aptly located at Al Balid Archaeological Park, which houses the ruins of Al Balid Frankincense Centre, a Unesco heritage site.
Among the many departments of the museum is one dedicated to Dhofar, the land of frankincense. The department displays different types of frankincense in addition to clay utensils and jewellery used during the ancient days.
Thousands of years ago, the southern region of Dhofar was famous for its frankincense, a product more valuable than gold at that time. The ancient cities of Al Balid, located in modern Salalah on the beach front, along with Khor Rori were two of the most famous trading centres for frankincense.
Today the two sites, now in ruins, are under the Unesco umbrella.
The Frankincense Land Museum, among the largest in Oman, will also contribute in promoting the Sultanate as a tourist hub and depicts the different phases of the Omani history and its relations with different cultures.
The museum includes various halls depicting history, marine activities, lectures and a hall for screening of documentary films based on history of Oman from ancient times till date. It also houses a shop of leather products, antiques, Omani publications and other products.
The history hall includes six departments which contain a number of archaeological findings like clay and domestic utensils and tools used for fishing.
An account of how Oman was introduced to Islam and the letter sent by Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) inviting the Omanis to embrace Islam is also available for viewing.
Findings that reflect the various phases of the Omani history including a number of documents and messages exchanged with other countries and the various stages of developments made from 1970 during the reign of the present ruler His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said are also showcased in the musuem.
