One hundred tourists dismiss US travel advice

The Sunday Standard 12 December 2003 Kenya received a rare vote of confidence when more than 100 European tourists shrugged off threats of terrorism and described it as one of the safest places to be. Speaking at a party in their honor at Travelers Beach Hotel in Mombasa, the tourists said terrorism was a global problem. They said they would not be deterred from vacationing in Kenya by any number of travel advisories. Elsewhere, the tourism industry suffered a setback, however, when the world’s largest travel and tour operator, Abercrombie and Kent (A&K), announced it was scaling down its Kenyan operations owing to poor tourist arrivals. One of the casualties was its Malindi office, which has been closed down. The operator Managing Director, Auni Kanji, said yesterday the office was closed because there would be no growth in the foreseeable future. At Travelers Beach Hotel, the tourists said they were impressed with the Government efforts to fight terrorism and ensure security for both citizens and visitors. The tourists said they would not cut short their holiday following a recent terrorist alert issued by the US Embassy in Nairobi. Alfred Brueggemann and his daughter Mary dismissed the latest terrorism alert. "We flew into the country when the alert was issued, and our family back in Germany warned us against coming," Brueggemann said. Mary, a journalist in Germany, said despite attempts by her mother to have her cancel the trip, she was determined to enjoy her holiday in Kenya.
