Despite being a newcomer in the aviation industry, Dubai International Airport is ranked among the fastest-growing airports in the world
and has received such aviation awards as World’s Favorite Airport (Conde Nast UK) and Best in Overall Customer Satisfaction Worldwide (a passenger survey conducted by IATA, the International Air Transport Association.
According to aviation experts, the Middle East should see a five percent annual growth in tourism in the coming years. Dubai aims to attract much of this market. The non-oil sector, of which tourism plays a principal role, contributes more than 60 percent to the economy. In 2002, Dubai welcomed 4.7 million tourists, a 31 percent increase ovr the previous year. Tourism figures are expected to reach 15 million by 2010.
To cope with the influx and ever-changing travel demands, Dubai International Airport, which currently has two terminals collectively handling 22 million passengers a year, will build a third terminal.
When the expansion program is finished, the airport will be able to handle 75 million passengers a year, while a Cargo Mega Terminal, to be constructed in stages until 2018, will be able to handle 3 million tons of freight.
