New Vision (Uganda) 25 Novemer 2003
East African defence ministers have asked the US and British governments to relax travel restrictions to East African countries, saying the ban has grossly affected economic activities in the region.
In a joint communique issued after a recent meeting of the Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the three ministers said the travel advisories had no sufficient grounds to continue.
The US, Britain and Australia recently issued travel advisories to their citizens warning them of potential terrorist attacks, especially in Kenya.
Ugandan minister of Defence Amama Mbabazi chaired the conference, attended by Prof. Philemon Sarungi (Tanzania) and Prof. Kivutha Kibwana (Kenyan deputy defence minister).
Mbabazi said, "We appreciate that governments can issue warnings, but not without sufficient grounds to persist. Terrorism can happen anywhere."
Ugandan delegates briefed the council on the terrorist activities in Uganda especially, those perpetuated by the Lord's Resistance Army rebels. The council appreciated the need to develop an East African capacity to effectively address terrorism in the region.
