It is impossible to mention Central Asia, without conjuring up images of the great 13th-century Venetian merchant, author and explorer, Marco Polo. During his 20 years in Asia, much of Marco Polo’s time was spent in China in service for the Mongolians under the rule of Kublai Khan, the grandson of the legendary Chingis Khan. Marco Polo began his journeys as a trader but soon became much more by traveling further than his predecessors, living within foreign societies and learning about their cultures. His book, entitled “The Travels of Marco Polo,” is perhaps one of the best commentaries about the Mongol Empire and chronicles his incredible journeys throughout Asia.
