Khaleej Times 17 April, 2004 In another sign of Lebanon's booming tourism industry, passenger traffic at Beirut's airport jumped
more than 20 per cent in the first quarter of 2004, officials said on Thursday.
A total of 665,449 passengers used the airport in the first three months of the year, 20.74 per cent more than during the same period last year.
Of those, 305,755 passengers were arrivals, an increase of slightly more than 21 per cent - putting the country on track to receive well over a million visitors this year.
Another 325,658 were departing, an increase of 18.5 per cent, while 34,036 used the recently renovated airport as a transit hub, a 41.6 per cent jump.
Air traffic also increased by 12.55 per cent.
Tourism has been on the rise in Lebanon for several years, breaking the million-visitor mark last year for the first time in three decades.
Arabs, who feel slighted in other parts of the world since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, make up about 43 per cent of the visitors, while Europeans who can take advantage of the high euro make up more than 26 per cent.
Lebanon, suffering an economic crisis and spiraling debt, has tried to boost tourism revenues since the 1990 end of its 15-year civil war which destroyed both its infrastructure and image of freewheeling stability.
