Strong North African Presence at TourismAfrica 2006

www.tourismafrica.com/newsletter_en/ The TourismAfrica 2006 Strategic Business Meeting will be held in Geneva from 10th – 15th September.

Since June 2006 the TourismAfrica team has been conducting a focussed campaign to bring together the many diverse stakeholders involved in the development and promotion of the tourist industry from all parts of the globe.

At present, national tour-operator associations, travel agencies, and investment institutions (financial institutions, airline companies, hotel chains, African and international banking institutions…) from the five continents have been contacted to diffuse information regarding the event to their individual members, and to invite them to participate in TourismAfrica2006.

Additionally, tour operators and travel agencies have been individually contacted and encouraged to participate in order to maximise the impact of the campaign.

The African countries have also invited their tourism interlocutors to TourismAfrica in order to liaise at their country stands and in networking spaces.

In addition, all partners and supporters of TourismAfrica are actively participating in this campaign:

  • The media partners of TourismAfrica, in particular those specialised in travel, tourism, investment and business sectors, have focussed promotion and issued invitations amongst their contacts likely to be interested in the event.
  • The organisations, institutions and associations affiliated with the event (UNWTO, ADB, UNCTAD, WAIPA, ATA…) have launched an extensive information campaign to inform their members of the upcoming event TourismAfrica2006.

Geoffrey Lipman, Special Advisor to the Secretary General of the UNWTO assures the presidency of the ‘Advisory Committee’ of TourismAfrica2006 that : "This event will not only become a global point of focus for promoting African Tourism it will make a serious contribution to the Millennium Development Goals over the next decade"

Tourism represents a considerable source of income for North Africa which has already achieved strong growth, and is expected positive forecasts in the coming years.

Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia  are among the North African participants. Algeria, Libya  and  Mauritania are increasingly recognised as new “hot” destinations while their governments identify tourism as a key economic sector for the future.

Countries such as Morocco or Tunisia, already benefiting from strong tourism influx, will also be present to propose a diversified offer and to develop new markets on the American continent, in Asia and

Libya’s  Strategic Forum will be held on Friday September 15th 2006. The “Destination Libya”  session will be  introduced by Mr Amar Almabrouk Eltaef, Secretary of General Peoples Committee for Tourism followed by a presentation on Tourism Attraction Sites in Libya.  The “Investment in Libya” Session will be introduced by  Dr. Ali Fares Aweda, Chairman of Tourism Development Authority followed by a presentation of Investment Opportunities.
