Oman Ministry of Tourism: Recently, in La Rochelle on the French Atlantic coast, the latest addition to Oman’s fast developing tourism sector slipped from a pier, on the first leg of her long journey to the Sultanate.
The yacht ‘Azzura’, a magnificent and state of the art 75 foot sailing catamaran will be based at Shangri La’s Bar al Jisseh resort from November 2007. Capable of carrying up to 60 passengers in the comfort and safety of her 110 square metre deck (a catamaran sails flat on the water, unlike more traditional mono hulled boats), Azzura will add more than a touch of French glamour to Oman’s tourism infrastructure. Designed specifically as a day charter vessel,. Azzura is one of only 55 of her kind in the world, and the first in the Middle East. The others are based in such mainstream tourism hotspots as the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the Pacific Islands, Mexico and Cuba. All are built by one of the world’s leading boat yards, Fountaine Pajot of France.‘Azzura is sophisticated and environmentally friendly’, says her Captain, Simon Stephens. “From whale watching to simply cruising and taking in the sights of the coast from Muttrah up towards Seeb on a sunset cruise, there is nothing to rival her. To be able to sit with nothing but the sound of the wind in her sails, cruising at a remarkable 12 knots, sipping a drink or nibbling on a snack – at dawn, midday or sunset Azzura will offer our guests an experience that is unparalleled in Oman. “We are really excited to be able to bring a boat like Azzura to a destination with as much to offer as Oman. She will significantly raise the bar of professionalism in sea tourism in the Sultanate,’ added Captain Stephens.Belonging to Ocean Blue International LLC, whose shareholders are the entrepreneurial Zawawi sisters Clara, Laila and Zahra, Azzura will be operated by Water World Marine LLC.Her journey to Oman will take her first to Gibraltar and Malta in the Mediterranean Ocean, then Port Said in Egypt, via the Suez Canal to Djibouti. Her first landfall in Oman will be in Salalah, expected to be in early November.
