Oman Hosts Power Boat Championship

Ministry Of Tourism Oman E-Newsletter: The World’s top ten power boat racing drivers are in Oman as part of the Formula 2000 Continental Cup-Middle East Power Boat Championship. The event marks the end of the Muscat Festival and it is sure to be remembered as one of its main highlights. Race goers are sure to be thrilled by the sheer power of these boats as they race off the beautiful Omani coastline. Muscat is perhaps one of the best places to hold such a championship race as it is blessed with a perfect coastline. The calm waters, warm temperatures and wide expanse of traffic-free waters are ideal for power boat racing. The Muscat race, being the first of the 2008 series, will set the tone for the four-leg championship. After Muscat, the teams move on to Fujairah, Bahrain and the concluding race will be at Port Ghalib in Egypt. The drivers taking part in Oman are the reigning champion, Colin Jelf, as well as Owen Jelf , Uvis Slakteris, Genady Tuchkov, Ugis Gross, Laszlo Kovacs, Yosef Al Rubayan, Alex Carella, Duarte Benavente, Jean Baptiste Thomas, Rick Ivar Haakonsen, Steve Cook, Per Edwardsen, Frode Sundsdal, Ian Andrews, Tommy Wahlsten and Arif Al Zafeen.The event was held near Qantab beach, spread on a circuit of 1,840 metres. A series of practice sessions took place over a two day period and the race itself was held on the 14th February. Equipped with powerful 2-litre V6 engines that can achieve speeds of around 115 mph, the power boats negotiate an exciting course of tight turns and open stretches. The longest stretch is 580 metres. The 30-minute race offered spectators a rare opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of one of the World’s most exciting water based championships.
