Tourism Ireland, the organisation responsible for marketing the island of Ireland overseas, has arranged for major landmarks and iconic sites around the globe - including Burj Al Arab in Dubai to 'go green' in honour of Ireland's National Day and the Irish diaspora all over the world.
The first celebrations kicked off as the sun set in New Zealand, when the Sky Tower in Auckland was bathed in green light. Then the 'green wave' continues here in Dubai with Burj Al Arab illuminating green as the sun disappears on the horizon. Table Mountain in South Africa will be next to turn green; then the Moulin Rouge in Paris, the Puerta de Alcalá monument in Madrid and the London Eye; followed a few hours later by the Empire State Building in New York and the CN Tower in Toronto.
The St. Patrick's Day celebrations will continue in the UAE with concerts by the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, 91 young Irish musicians including the film Irish Destiny with live orchestral accompaniment, composed and performed by Míchaél Ó Suilleabháin followed by The Brendan Voyage performed by Liam O'Flynn on the Uillean pipes.
His Excellency, Ciaran Madden, Irish Ambassador to the UAE, said: "St. Patrick's Day is not just a celebration for Irish people. It is a celebration for all those who have enjoyed Irish music, Irish literature and even just Irish company over the years. This year, the UAE we will see a very special celebration with the lighting of Burj Al Arab and the performances by the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. We are lucky to have musicians of the calibre of Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and Liam O'Flynn joining the Youth Orchestra for these events."
