Since 1998, the Avenue of Volcanoes, the common nickname for the Highlands of Ecuador, revealed its appropriateness, when two volcanoes, the Guaga-Pichincha and the Tungurahua, became newly active. Walks Worldwide’s exclusive tour visits all the highlights of mainland Ecuador including the volcanic ‘hotspots’, during an 18-day fully-guided trekking holiday departing London 12th September 2007. Travelling north from the vibrant colonial capital of Quito, there is time to explore the famous Saturday market at Otavalo before heading through the Pasochoa Biological Reserve and Cotopaxi National Park. From their hacienda accommodation, walkers embark on a series of day treks around the base of the smoking snow-capped Cotpaxi (6,000m), said to be the highest active volcano in the world. Further south walkers commence the unique Carihuairazo/Chimborazo Trail, trekking between these two sister mountains, with stunning backdrops of glaciers, moraines and lakes, to the world-famous Whymper Hut, named after pioneering climber, Edward Whymper. Next they climb aboard the Devil’s Nose Train, ‘the most difficult journey in the world’, sitting aloft the train as it negotiates a series of mind-bending switchbacks. The second trekking expedition has an historical flavour, traversing a 35km portion of the old Inca Royal Highway that ran from Quito to Cusco. The ancient route is followed in the footsteps of Incan couriers, to the city of Ingapirca, built as a temple for sun worship more than 500 years ago. En route there is hill country, home to small colourful communities and beautiful lagoons, spending nights in peaceful campsites. Finally there is drive to Cuenca, Ecuador’s most enchanting colonial city, point of origin for iconic head gear in the form of the Panama Hat.
