The Art Newspaper, 21 April, 2004 The Louvre has announced that it will convert the Cour Visconti (the Visconti courtyard) in one of its eastern wings into its new Islamic
department. The courtyard will be covered with a roof, and a competition to select an architect will be held next year. The Louvre was instructed to create an Islamic department by President Jacques Chirac in 2002, as part of the Grand Louvre project of reforms and extensions. In November last year Francis Richard, an Islamic Art expert, was appointed to manage the department, which is scheduled to open in 2007. The Louvreأ¢â‚¬â„¢s Islamic collection includes over 10,000 objects, one-tenth of which are currently on view in the department of oriental antiquities.
