Istanbul’s Suleymaniye Neighbourhood Restored

www.zaman.com The first concrete steps were taken by officials to save the historical houses from decaying in Suleymaniye, a historical neighborhood in Istanbul, where examples of religious and civil architectures of the city are intensively seen. The neighborhood, which is included in the World Heritage List, but looks like a ruin, will become a construction site as of April 1, 2006.
Restoration works are envisioned to be completed within three years. Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Istanbul Governor’s Office, and the Eminonu Municipality jointly took action to save the neighborhood after Zaman’s headline “History Burned and Turned into Auto Park†on its December 6, 2004 edition. Zaman’s news article showed pictures of burnt historic buildings, replaced by auto parks. Zaman’s news article achieved to draw the attention of officials to Suleymaniye. Following Zaman’s news, police cleansed the decaying houses from glue-sniffing junkies. Eminonu Municipality closed the unlicensed auto parks and said they will not permit auto parks to be built in the place of the historic houses. The State has allocated 400 trillion Turkish liras for the restoration of the decaying historical Suleymaniye houses. An emergency plan has been prepared for Suleymaniye. The municipality purchased 55 houses in the neighborhood so far. These houses will be restored immediately. Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbas and Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Atilla Koc said they will do whatever is necessary to save the historic Suleymaniye houses.
The old Suleymaniye neighborhood of Istanbul has been selected as a pilot region for the “Historic Peninsula Project†initiated by Turkish Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan last year. The wood houses will be restored first within the framework of the Suleymaniye project, which is known as the “Museum-City Projectâ€Â. The municipality will demolish all concrete buildings on the area between Suleymaniye and Sehzade Mosques, both masterworks by the great Architect, Sinan.
