When It Snows Life Stops in Turkey

Snow, storms and cold weather has brought life to a standstill all over Turkey this week.
The end of semester holidays has begun one day early in several provinces due to bad weather conditions. Power failures have been reported and water could not reach certain areas. In the big cities, roads are congested and public transport services such as subways and trams are not operating. Some highways are temporary closed. This does not bode well for the country’s tourist industry which counter promote winter sports and a winter wonderland.
Working people battled to reach their workplaces. 80% of European side of Istanbul was without electricity. And with electricity heaters not working, many people went to relatives' homes that have other kind of heaters. Officials said that the power outages were caused by defects in the transmission lines. People left without heat in their homes complained, 'Istanbul, the biggest city in Turkey, has been covered in darkness after it snowed for a few hours. How can this be?'
Several rivers on the European and Asian sides burst their banks, flooding workplaces and homes and disrupting traffic. In Maltepe, the Gulsuyu stream which is under construction, also overflowed.
