Zeugma Mosaics to be Displayed in Istanbul

Zaman 28 May, 2004 A final court decision has been made on the debate over the transportation and display of the Zeugma mosaics. It was decided that the only authority on historical monuments was the Culture Ministry.
Thus, it will be possible to display the Zeugma mosaics at the Topkapi Palace during the NATO Summit to be held in Istanbul.
A disagreement between the Culture and Tourism Ministry and civilian society organizations in Gaziantep broke out based on reports that the Zeugma mosaics would be displayed in the Topkapi Palace for foreign guests participating in the NATO Summit. Civilian society organizations objected to the idea of carrying the mosaics to another city, unified under the Zeugma Platform title. In order to prevent interference with the Mosaics, they filed a lawsuit at Gaziantep's First Circuit Court. The lawsuit was filed on March 11th, when the mosaics were put into boxes to be taken to Istanbul. The court awarded an injunction for the lawsuit filed by platform arguing that the transport of 'immovable monuments' was a crime. Gaziantep's First Circuit Court decided to open the archeology museum where the Zeugma mosaics are displayed and put the boxed up mosaics on exhibition again. The lawsuit concluded with a victory for the Culture and Tourism Ministry. The Court decided to repeal the injunction it had awarded before. |
