Fifteen years of excavations at Hellenistic site

www.zaman.com The 15th anniversary of the start of archaeological work on an ancient city from the Hellenistic era in Torbali, Izmir was commemorated this week.
Since 1989, a theatre, a council building, a pedestrian path, a hamam complex, a Byzantine tower and church, and a building with a pool have been found at the site under the supervision of the Culture and Tourism Ministry and Dokuz Eylul University. Prof. Dr. Recep Meric of Dokuz Eylul University said that their work at the site is able to continue because of the US$100,000 in support from the Philip Morris-Sabanci Partnership since 1992 and over TL 50 billion in funding from the Culture Ministry. |
