www.zaman.com "Mothers, Goodness and Lady Sultans", an exhibition organized by the Manager of Sakip Sabanci Museum, Nazan Olcer, and the Manager of Topkapi Museum, Filiz Cagman, will take fans of western art on a nine thousand-year journey from the early 20th century to prehistory periods.
Almost every stage of the journey is open to mysticism and investigation. It is not only mystical but also meaningful. In the travel, where women find meaning and value according to civilizations, it is possible to see a woman of the Copper, Bronze and Iron Age; women of Hittite, Urart, Greece, Rome and Ottoman standing side by side.
Works display woman figurines made of soil, stone, and clay. There are pictures of goddesses scraped on stones, jewels that belong to Hittite women, to the Antique Greek and Rome civilizations, as well as the Byzantine Empire periods. Not only does the exhibit point to the place of women in these communities but it also gives her clues about the arts of these civilizations and life styles.
Women of, or "sultans" of, the Ottoman Palace are exhibited with pictures of the sultans. Caftans, jewels, daily clothes and a picture of an old woman from Istanbul on miniatures, gravures and paintings support the sultans' portraits. All these works besides informing the ones visiting the exhibition about the elegance of Ottoman life, it takes us to a curious travel through the world behind this elegance and gleam. |
