Yerevan looks like a blossoming flower. The city's heart is the Republic Square. The Government of RA, House of Unions, Armenia Marriott Hotel, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Gallery surround the square like petals. The ornaments here are considered to be the singing fountains.
One of the main streets starting from the square is Amiryan Street which stretches up to Saryan Street. The latter is famous for the main post-office of the city. Amiryan Street crosses Mashtots avenue, which is popular with Matenadaran. More than 25.000 manuscripts are kept here. There is also one of Yerevan's cinemas in this street.
One of the oldest streets of the city is Abovyan, the favorite place for walking. It is rich in cultural, educational and leisure centres. Few are those who know about the church St Mariam the Virgin in Abovyan Street, just in the yard of the Language Institute. The cinema "Moskva" is in Abovyan as well. A little away Toumanyan Street crosses Abovyan. On the crossroads of Toumanyan and Mashtots one can see the Opera House on the right, and the newly-built block North Avenue on the left.
The area surrounding the Opera House is full of statues: the statue of Hovhannes Toumanyan (writer) and Alexander Spendiaryan (composer) are in the Azatutyan Square, the statue of Aram Khachatryan (composer) is in front of the Philharmonic Concert Hall. And the statue of Arno Babajanyan (composer) is next to the Swan Lake. By the way, the Swan Lake turns into a skating-rink in winter.
On Saturdays and Sundays in some areas of the city there are exhibition-sales which are called "vernisaje" by the locals. One of them is paintings-exhibition near the statue of Martiros Saryan (artist). The other one is souvenirs and paintings exhibition in the copse which lies between Hanrapetoutyan and Khanjyan Streets.
"The most political" avenue is Baghramyan. Here are located the Constitutional Court, National Assembly, the Presidential Palace and a number of embassies. Going up along Baghramyan Street one can see the statue of Marshal Baghramyan on the right, and "restaurant street" Proshyan on the left.
In the neighbourhood of the Opera House, in Moskovyan Street, the statue of Alexander Tamanyan (the architect of Yerevan) is situated. Behind this statue you can see the "Cascade" Complex the 2780 stairs of which will take you to the Haghtanak Park. Before reaching this park you will meet a monument which symbolizes Yerevan. After it you can enter the park and see the monument to Mayr Hayastan (Mother Armenia) which guards the capital city with the sword in her hands. From the height of Cascade the monument to the Genocide Victims and Sport Concert Complex are seen. The cascade height will help you to enjoy the astounding beauty of the city at night. Visiting Yerablur (in Sebastia Street) and Pantheon of Famous Armenians (in Arshakounyats Avenue) one can learn about Armenians' heroic past and rich culture.
In the eastern part of Yerevan the Hrazdan River flows in the canyon of which there are a lot of restaurants with their traditional dishes. On the left of the river St Sarkis church and S. Parajanov (film director) museum welcome you and the Yerevan Brandy Company is on the right. Just on the opposite side of the factory the Yerevan Wine Plant is situated.
Your children can enjoy their time at Children's Railway, Zoo, Botanical Garden, Water land and State Circus (Gr. Lousavorich Street).
The art of theatre has been developed since the ancient times. That is why a lot of theatres can be found in Yerevan.
Ancient Yerevan was founded by the King Argishti in 782 B.C. and was named Erebuni. The castle town Arin-Berd is like an open-air museum. It is in the end of Erebuni Street. In this area is also located the Yerevan Railway Station, in front of which the statue of Sasountsi Davit (by Yervand Kochar) can be seen. Sasountsi Davit is the hero of Armenian epic.
To feel Armenia completely you should taste Armenian fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, preserved and tinned goods. These can be found in all Yerevan stores and markets. One such-like market is situated in the end of Mashtots Avenue. Here you can feel the Oriental style and breath entirely. |
