Boost For Saudi Domestic Tourism

Khaleej Times: Nearly 4.5 million Saudi tourists would spend nearly SR70 billion on tourism abroad this year, an increase of 40 per cent against the preceding year, amid Saudi riyal’s low exchange rate, according to market analysts.Malaysia is the favourite destination of Saudi tourists in Asia. About 10 per cent increase was expected in the number of Saudi tourists going to Malaysia this season compared to last year. Many Saudi families prefer to spend their holidays in Malaysia because of its peaceful atmosphere, salubrious climate and reasonable prices. The number of Saudis visiting the US, Canada, Australia and South Africa was also likely to increase by 10 per cent this year. For many, Egypt is the favourite destination in the Arab world and all flights to Egypt are fully booked until mid-August.Analysts believe that the growing cost of foreign tourism is likely to encourage many Saudis to spend their holidays within the kingdom. The Supreme Commission for Tourism (SCT) has stepped up efforts to promote domestic tourism by expanding tourist infrastructure facilities and organising tourist festivals.Makkah Governor Prince Khaled Al Faisal recently met SCT’s Secretary-General Prince Sultan bin Salman and emphasised the need for an equal distribution of major tourist destinations among the kingdom’s 13 regions. During the meeting, Prince Khaled was briefed on a number of projects in Jeddah and Taif. “Jeddah will become an all-year-round integrated tourist destination,” the SCT chief said.Prince Sultan also disclosed plans to launch a new festival named Abhur Tourism Festival this year. It will be held annually during the Eidal Fitr holidays. Another festival named Okaz Souk Festival will be held in Taif this year. “We’ll develop this festival into a major annual national festival,” he added. This year’s Madina Summer Festival, which is running until August 8, is estimated to draw 500,000 visitors to the city.Madina Governor Prince Abdul Aziz bin Majed launched the 35-day festival named Taiba 28 during a function at Al Nakheel Park. Yousuf Al Muzaini, chairman of the organising committee, said the activities would be held in five locations: King Fahd Park, Al Nakheel Park, Hejaz Railway Station area, Al Hassan Mall, and Aliyat Al Madina. The festival, which is organised by the region’s tourism council in collaboration with the Madina Governorate and the Supreme Council of Tourism, aims at creating a tourism base that would attract visitors and benefit the local economy. This year’s festival includes more than 80 cultural, sport and entertainment activities. The cultural programmes include an exhibition on the history of Madina and the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), a painting exhibition, and a display of aerial photographs of the holy city. The Geological Museum, the Hijaz Railway Museum, and the Heritage Museum also feature in the festival. The organisers have worked with the Supreme Commission for Tourism to chalk out programmes in a way that suits the general taste of the city. The youth and sports programmes, organised in collaboration with the Youth Welfare Presidency and the Uhud Sports Club, include equestrian games, camel races, car races, balloon displays, and motorcycle and roller-skating contests. There are also arts displays, including drama, songs and handicrafts. Programmes for women, which include dress and flower displays, are organised at the Hassan Mall.
