Syria’s National Museum is one of the most important witnesses to the Arab civilization in particular, and the world’s civilization in general
It was founded in 1919 in the city of Damascus.
Everything on display was excavated and unearthed in Syria. Exhibits at the museum are classified in chronological order. The first department of the museum contains Syrian antiquities and archaeological finds dating from pre- history.
Here visitors can see stone tools and utensils dating back to about one million years before Christ, a child’s skeleton from the Neanderthal Age, bones of extinct animals unearthed in the Orontes basin and jewels from pre- history.
The second department contains old Syrian antiquities from the Aramaic, Canaanite and Akkadian civilizations. Some of these antiquities are an ivory head of a princess dating from the 14th century B.C., a clay tablet of the first alphabet and statuettes of Canaanite gods like Bel, Ashtarte, metal weapons, pottery utensils, and cylindrical seals. There are also some of Eblas finds, Maris clay tablets, statuettes, seals, and goddesses.
The third department contains antiquities dating from the Byzantine, Roman and Greek eras. One can see here the most beautiful of Palmyras antiquities, sculptures unearthed in Daraa and Sweida, mosaic paintings representing agricultural and sports activities, myths and jewels.
The fourth department contains Islamic Arab antiquities. The frontier of Qasr Al- Hir Al- Gharbi (The Western Hir Palace) which was built during the rule of the Umayyad Caliph Hisham Ibn Abdul Malik in 727 A.D. is the most beautiful among the antiquities and ruins of this department. There are also ruins and archaeological finds from the city of Raqqa dating back to the Abbasid era when Islamic Arab architecture and arabesque were in full swing.
The site of Damascus National museum, which is one of the most beautiful parks in the city, is also an open air museum boasting beautiful exhibits.
