Syrian Times 18 January, 2004
Baalshamin Temple stands in the north part of the archaeological city of Palmyra dates back to the second century A.D. أ¢â‚¬آڈ
It was built on the site of an older temple constructed in the first century A.D. The dining room, some corridors and a burial chamber are still standing today. أ¢â‚¬آڈ
Palmyrene writing on the walls of the burial chamber dating back to 130- 131 A.D. show that Mali Ibn Yarhai gave orders to build the temple in honour of Baalshamin the Lord of heavens, rain and fertility in Palmyra.
Visitors can see in the temple Greek writing on a pedestal indicating to Mali Ibn Yarhai as the builder of this temple. أ¢â‚¬آڈ
There is a beautiful mihrab inside the temple rebuilt in 1969 by the Syrian excavation team. Seventeen other columns were also rebuilt in the north courtyard of the temple. Writing on these columns date back to 63 A.D.
