www.syriamc.com Syria became the country with the largest number of World Heritage Sites after the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNSECO) placed two further Syrian sites on the list.
The latest additions are the 12th century Crac des Chevaliers crusader castle and Qal’at Salah El-Din (the Fortress of Saladin, whose construction began in the 10th century.
They represent the most significant examples of fortification systems, marking a progression from European systems and contributing to the development of Levantine castles.
Crac des Chevaliers is the best preserved Crusader Castle and, occupies an important position in the history of architecture. The Fortress of Saladin, even though in partial ruin, is famous for its stratigraphy (rock layering).
Syria’s other World Heritage Sites are Palmyra and the ancient cities of Aleppo, Bosra and Damascus.
