Old workshops attract tourists

Syrian Times 17 March, 2004 Near the Azem palace in Damascus there is a long souq known as the straight street.
Mosaic workshops, arabesque, wood inlaid with shells, decorative wooden boxes and other oriental crafts are spread out on both sides of the souq. Damascene craftsmen in these workshops turn raw materials like wood, copper, shells and other metals into artistic pieces having the aesthetical pleasures of the east. These pieces are usually sold to customers to decorate their houses or offices. أ¢â‚¬آڈ
Nawaf Al- Masri, owner of a big workshop in the souq, says the makers of these artistic pieces have sophisticated tastes. Their clever and skilful hands with only simple tools succeed in creating new objects with attractive designs. These craftsmen inspire the rich heritage of the Arab ancestors which is known widely as the "arabesque.
Al- Masri adds that specialized craftsmen work hard in their workshop to enrich and develop the art of the arabesque to meet present day needs of the people. We all know, Al- Masri said, that Syria was and still is the cradle of time old crafts like mosaics, pottery- making, glassware and ceramics. Wood- carving, stone- carving and shell- inlaying are generally followed in every old Damascene handicraft.... أ¢â‚¬آڈ
Al- Masri concluded that the Damascene handicrafts attract hundreds of foreign tourists everyday. أ¢â‚¬آڈ
