Syrian Times 4 April, 2004 Syria's two great monuments dating back to Roman Times are found
close to the capital.. Al- Dumeir Temple, is just 40 kilometers to east of Damascus, while Bosra Esham which is about 40 kilometers to the east of Daraa south of Damascus.
"Bosra is amazing ten years from now it will be the second Pompeii, the most preserved Roman town in Italy", said one European archaeologist excavating at the Roman ancient city of Apullum, better known today as Bosra Esham. .
Situated about 40 km east of Daraa, Bosra, is excellently well- preserved and boasts monuments of great dimensions- a monumental town like Palmyra and Petra. Once the capital of the Roman province of Arabia, an important stopover on the ancient caravan route to Mecca, Bosra has conserved within its thick walls a magnificent Roman theatre from the 2nd century early Christian ruins and several mosques.
Visitors are amazed by the grandeur of its Amphitheatre. What is also important about Bosra is the continuity between the Hellenistic culture, the Nabathean town then the Roman town, a development from the Nabatean state. It demonstrates the continuity of the past from antiquities of the Romans, Byzantines until the Islamic period. There is a 14th century Islamic Hammam (bathhouse) next to a Roman bath.
The archaeological temple of the city of Al- Dumeir is a Roman relic and a witness to the Roman kingdom. This building, according to architects specialised in Roman buildings, took more than 100 years of continued work.
Archaeologists believe that the building is unrivalled by any other relic from the same era.
In 1904 A.D. an American archaeologist visited the site and prepared a full study about its architecture and its history. Excavations revealed that the site was a building dedicated to god Bel Zeus, one of the gods of Bilad Esh- Sham.
Some scholars and archaeologists believe that the present site is not the site of the temple, but it is the gate and the road leading to the temple which is hidden behind.
The Roman temple of Al- Dumeir is some 40 kilometers east of Damascus.
From the outside, the site with its grey and black stones give a fortress- like picture. It is pleasing despite its severe appearance.
