Damascene perfumers add a secret to lend of wild herbs to the mixture they prepare make perfume.
Young perfumers, who have learned the secrets of perfumery from their fathers, have been trained to distinguish between different mixtures until their noses never make mistakes. Syrian perfumers do not use chemicals because they believe that chemicals has adverse affects on the skin. They manufacture their perfumes from natural herbs, flowers and roses which are grown in abundance in Syrian mountainous areas and valleys...
No doubt, Syrian perfumers benefitted from our ancestors in the whole East, including India and China. Perfumer Yassin Al- Masri says that perfume- making is a job and a craft he inherited from his father, and his father before him.
Al- Masri adds that perfumery is his family’s heritage and the secrets of this craft can not be revealed to strangers. He confirms that Syrian perfume reflects the fragrance of Syria`s wild nature, the mountains, the semi- desert and the Jasmine, roses, tulips, violets and gardenia of cities.
Yassin Al- Masri and his brother Suleiman teach their sons how to make perfume. They say that there are two schools for Syrian perfume: one in Damascus and the other in Aleppo. But, according to them, the Damascene school is more famous and more experienced in perfume making .
