Times of Syria 29 September, 2004 Al-Hijaz Railway Station operates the oldest steam train, which is still working today - it is train number 755.
This train, which was made in Switzerland in 1894 is known here by the name أ¢â‚¬إ“The Faithful Servantأ¢â‚¬آ. Many of its carriages have been repaired at Al- Qadam factory which is also one of the oldest factories in the that repairs steam trains.
Al- Hijaz Railway Station in Damascus has recently turned part of the factory into a museum which contain rare tools and instruments to repair trains from the 19th and 20th centuries. It also has the workersأ¢â‚¬â„¢ special that uniforms, lighting systems, alarm bells, wall clocks, seals, manual calculators, manual telephones and other rare devices.
Al- Hijaz railway was built in 1900 A.D. and was used to carry pilgrims from Syria to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The first Syrian train arrived at the Medina on 22/ 8/ 1908. The journey took 55 hours.
