Spotlight On Desert Culture

www.zayedprize.org A series of scientific programmes, conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, real life demonstrations and documentary films will put the spotlight on “The Cultures & Civilizations of World Deserts†over a one week period (16th to 22nd April), as Zayed International Prize for the Environment, World Deserts Foundation and the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) join forces to explore the spirit of the desert.
Announcing the details of the second festival to the media, UAE Minister of Health, His Excellency Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Midfa said, “Desert regions have grown from oblivion into thriving metros in recent times and the Second Festival of The Cultures & Civilizations of World Deserts will trace desert life from the past to the present through to the future.â€Â
“We have put together a full program of workshops, seminars and conferences that will enable people to know more about desert life that represents a blend of simplicity and nature and the purity of spirit,†remarked Mr. Midfa.
He added that delegations from various countries led by Ministers will participate in this event including the likes of Honorable President of Algeria & Patron of the World Deserts Foundation, Abdelaziz Bouteflika and other heads of state and members of the UAE Supreme Council.
Speaking on behalf of the DTCM, Director General, Khalid A. bin Sulayem said, “We take this opportunity to welcome the rest of the world, to experience a different style of life that is varied and rich and offers an unforgettable taste of the desert, recreating cherished moments of the desert’s glorious past and diverse culture.â€Â
Mr. bin Sulayem noted that dedicated programme modules would cover sustainable development of desert regions through a ministerial conference on environment and tourism. “A roundtable discussion on harnessing science and using technology and innovation for the sustainability of world deserts will also be organised on day two of the event.â€Â
Exhibitions featuring architecture in desert regions, traditional forms of desert medicine, desert literature, folklore and popular arts, dances and poetry will be organised with wide spread participation from countries such as Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, South Africa, Morocco, Oman, Sudan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Iran, India, Libya, Pakistan and China among others.
“We are confident that this event will stimulate interest in desert cultures and civilizations - its people, history, economic and social development,†Mr. bin Sulayem said.
