Dubai International: The World’s Fastest Growing Airport

Khaleej Times: Dubai International had accommodated 34.34 million travellers or an increase of 19.31 per cent in 2007, making it the world's fastest-growing airport in terms of the number of international passengers.
It also maintained a 15 per cent average annual growth rate for the sixth consecutive year, after surpassing the projected handling of 33 million passengers for last year, according to a Press statement.
This growth reflects Dubai's robust economy and its increasing popularity as an international hub for commerce and tourism, said Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) and chairman of Dubai Airports.
"It is also a clear sign of our intent and vision for the future of the aviation sector in Dubai," he said, adding that the airport would handle 40 million passengers this year.
The statement said that Dubai International would likely raise its ranking with the Airports Council International, which placed it on the 10th place among the world's busiest airports in 2006 following the handling of more than 28.78 million passengers.
It added that the airport had increased aircraft movement by 9.81 per cent last year, with December being the busiest month at 23,309. It had handled a total of 260,530 movements, or an average of 725 aircraft per day, as compared to 237,258 in 2006.
"Dubai International's continuing success is a result of the dedication and teamwork of one and all at Dubai Airports and our strategic partners, and an achievement for all of us to take pride in," Shaikh Ahmed said.
Mohammed Ahli, director-general of DCAA, credited Dubai's open skies policy for this success. "We have had new airlines joining us periodically, thanks to Dubai's envious position as the region's best connection, and our destination network has also expanded rapidly especially in recent years," he said.
The list of airlines serving Dubai rose to 120 as of last year, up by seven more from the previous year, while its network now has 205 destinations. The statement said that August 2007 was the busiest month for the airport with over three million passengers while October recorded the highest growth rate at 29.92 per cent.
"For the first time, monthly passenger throughout crossed the three-million-mark thrice during the year, while it was above 2.5 million for each of the other nine months," it stressed. It said that the average passenger movement per day at Dubai International is 95,000.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said the airport's record growth "is an accomplishment" as well as a source of future challenges. "As a commercial entity, Dubai Airports intends to further speed up the overall growth rate of Dubai International and, in the near future, of Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International, while at the same time improving our customer service levels," he said.
Dubai International will be complemented by Dubai World Central International Airport, a colossal new airport ongoing near Jebel Ali.
It will be officially known as Al Maktoum International Airport and will be the main part of Dubai World Central, a planned residential, commercial logistics complex development.
