Indonesia Considers Leasing Islands

ETurboNews Taking a cue from Maldives’ “one island, one resort” scheme, the Indonesian government announced it is planning to lease thousands of its island not only to encourage development but also to increase revenues. Tourism Ministry Secretary-General Sapta Nirwandar said leasing islets could help the government develop at least a half the 10,000 tiny islands across the 17,500-island archipelago. Sapta acknowledged that a comparative study related to Maldives has been conducted. “The success is supported by foreign investors, who are allowed to manage resorts. This allows the Maldives to earn thousands of dollars every month,” Sapta said. An islet is termed as a land mass in a group of islands that can support small communities, which interact with the land socially, economically and culturally. Most islets are only a few square kilometers in size.
Nias Island in North Sumatra, Bunaken in North Sulawesi and Raja Ampat of Papua were among the best-developed islets, which were already on the world tourist map, said Sapta. Referring to islets, Sapta said the potential can be converted into popular destinations for tourists as they offered great natural attractions for marine resort sites, including pristine diving and surfing locations.
“Such destinations can attract affluent tourists, such as those who travel in cruise ships,” he said. Around 80 of the floating resorts were expected to travel through Indonesian waters this year. |
