Travel warning for Iraq, Egypt

Britons may be targeted by threats being made in northern Iraq to kidnap foreign nationals, says the Foreign Office
It also warned that the widespread violence in Iraq is likely to increase during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting which began on October 15th.
The new advice came after the beheading last week of U.K. hostage Kenneth Bigley by militants who also had kidnapped and killed two of his American engineer colleagues in Baghdad.
Previously, the U.K. government had urged Britons to avoid all but essential travel to Iraq, calling it dangerous there. In addition, the Foreign Office issued new travel guidance for Egypt following three recent car bombings in resorts that killed at least 34 people. "The threat from terrorism on the east coast of the Sinai Peninsula is high," the office said. |
