Australia’s Domestic Tourism Declines

eTN Asia Even as Australia evoked mixed response for its recent and the biggest ever tourism advertising campaign, “Where the bloody hell are you?”, there has been a call for improving focus on domestic tourism following a fall in the number of Australians holidaying at home. The latest national visitor survey showed 69.9 million overnight domestic trips were taken by Australians in 2005, a drop of six percent vis-a-vis the previous year. The number of nights spent away fell by seven percent in the same period to 275.9 million. Referring to such figures, opposition tourism spokesman Martin Ferguson said the figures confirmed the “parlous” state of domestic tourism. “Clearly, this is an unsustainable situation for the tourism industry, which has been hit by higher petrol prices, record household debt, competition from white goods, untaken leave and, now, Cyclone Larry,” said Ferguson. “Under the tourism white paper, $45 million was allocated to Tourism Australia for domestic tourism, some of which was used for a domestic advertising campaign. But the industry is rightly asking, as the minister should be, where did the rest of the money go?” he questioned. As per the information available, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures last year, 4.7 million Australian traveled overseas, compared to 4.3 million in 2004. On her part, Tourism Minister Fran Bailey called on the states to boost advertising budgets to lure Australians to holiday in their own country instead of going overseas, according to The Age. “State governments should not walk away from their primary tourism responsibility - promoting their own state to Australians,” she reportedly said. “With state budget season fast approaching, it is time for state governments to face up to their responsibility and invest now to promote the best their state has to offer.” |
