The once ambitious Hijaz Railway project is stumbling
three years after the Amman-Damascus route was activated, Jordan Hijaz Railway Corporation Director General Abdul Razzaq Abul-Feilat said.
He said the long duration of the journey between the two capitals - a total of six hours - makes the train the last option for passengers. The railway witnessed relatively high demand during the first three months after the route reopened, he said, but it has declined since أ¢â‚¬إ“although the train is a safer and cheaperأ¢â‚¬آ mode of transport.
However, the transportation of goods between Jordan and Syria using the railway is a success for the corporation, Abul-Feilat said. He attributed the demand, which increased by 600 per cent in the past two years, to the relative speed in transporting the cargo and the reasonable rates.
He called on businessmen to take advantage of a 25 per cent discount the organisation recently announced.
If the century-old Hijazi railway is to be fully activated, the width of the rail needs to be increased from 105cm to 143cm, the official said, adding that such a project is extremely expensive.
Nevertheless, he said, his organisation is ready to negotiate with a strategic partner interested in investing in the railways. He said studies and talks are under way in this regard.
