www.peregrineadventures.co.uk Peregrine Adventurers invites travellers to plunge into the past during a fascinating 16-day journey through Egypt and Jordan, from Cairo to Amman.
It’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lawrence of Arabia and Ben Hur, all rolled into one great adventure! Those on the tour will see Egypt’s major Pharoanic sites including the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, explore the evocative desert landscapes of Jordan’s Wadi Rum and even chance a day at the races – full-blooded chariot racing Roman-style, in the restored Roman Hippodrome in the ancient city of Jerash.
Peregrine’s tour starts in Cairo with a visit to the renowned Egyptian Museum providing a good background before heading out to see the sights. The tour covers many of Egypt’s major sites including the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, the magnificent Temples at Karnak and the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, together with the remarkable Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the monolithic Colossi of Memnon.
A 3-night Nile cruise to Aswan, Egypt’s second largest city, stops for further exploration at the temples of Edfu and Komombo en route. The return journey to Cairo is by overnight sleeper train, following the course of the Nile for most of its journey.
Having experienced the highlights of ancient Egypt, there’s an opportunity to explore medieval Cairo including a guided tour around the tortuous alleyways of bustling Khan el Khalili bazaar.
Leaving the city, the next stop is the Sinai peninsula with a journey through the Suez Canal tunnel towards Mt. Sinai, where very early risers can experience a spectacular sunrise climb.
Next, a hydrofoil takes travellers to Jordan and the busy port of Aqaba. The desert landscapes of Wadi Rum are explored by 4wd jeeps, allowing a whole day in the rock-hewn, ancient Nabatean city of Petra.
During a drive along the King’s Highway, a route that dates from Old Testament times, visits are made to the Crusader castle at Shobak and the Roman site of ancient Jerash – dating from 70AD. This magnificently preserved Roman city is the exciting backdrop to a colourful demonstration of Roman military capability, gladiator fights and that most Roman of all sports, chariot racing. Spectators can sit in the restored Hippodrome in the very same stone seats the Romans would have sat, in their togas and sandals, over twenty centuries ago. "Jerash is the only place in the world where Roman army, gladiators and chariot racing performances can be experienced in a genuine Roman setting.
