Taba: Natural Luxury

www.arabtimes.com AN oasis of tranquillity and luxury, Taba lies at the tip of the Gulf of Aqaba. This small Bedouin village, once an isolated stopover on a caravan route to Jordan and Saudi Arabia, has transformed itself into an exclusive holiday haven. Situated on the most picturesque coast of the Sinai, lined with bays, coves, lagoons and spectacular mountain backdrops, Taba is the northernmost resort of Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera. The region’s biggest attraction is the crystalline blue water strewn with superb coral reefs. Ever since Jacques Cousteau choose the Red Sea to introduce television viewers to undersea life, visitors from all over the world have come here to enjoy the ultimate joys of diving. The exceptional richness of underwater life in the Red Sea and in the Gulf of Aqaba is due to an unusual combination of environmental factors. The Red Sea is sheltered; moreover, its currents are gentle and regular, its tides almost nonexistent, and its temperature warm and steady. Its deep waters are warmed by volcanic heat emanating from the seabed, thus creating an environment ideally suited to the complex coral reef ecosystem. The marine life is plentiful; marine species include the napoleon wrasse, vivid orange coral groupers, huge gorgonian fans, moray eels, hammerhead sharks, delicate lionfish, turtles, the occasional dolphin and graceful, swooping giant manta rays. In addition to diving, other available water sports are snorkeling, windsurfing, sailing, water-skiing, paddle boating, jet skiing and fishing. Other activities that can be booked in a hotel are quad biking into the desert and jeep safaris into the neighboring canyons. The Colored Canyon with its spectacular natural rock hues is a favorite destination.Situated 35 kilometers from Taba International Airport, Taba Heights is a year-round resort which offers luxury hotels, a marina, a golf course and its own village. Designed by John Stanford, the 18-hole-championship course measures 6450m and is well suited to challenge golfers of all levels. As part of this philosophy, each hole offers the option of five different tee placements, allowing golfers to undergo exciting challenges or stick within their handicap levels. Golfers can expect target fairways and approach shots over lakes, flood canals, or well-surrounded desert green complexes with elevation ranging from to 4 to 70 meters. The marina presently has 11,500 square meters of water area, with depths of between 2.5 and 3 meters near the main building. The marina can accommodate up to 50 yachts and provide overnight mooring, refueling services, chandlers and repair facilities.

The perfect gateway to Jordan, day trips to Petra can be organized directly from the marina. Furthermore, as soon as Taba Heights’ sister project is completed at Tala Bay in Aqaba, additional services will be provided to the marina there as well. Cairo with its pyramids and bazaars is 450 km away and it takes only two and a half hours to reach Sharm El Sheikh by car. Ancient and natural wonders within close proximity can also be explored. Pharaoh’s island — also known as Geziret Faroun — is just a few hundred meters from the coast. It is dominated by the majestic presence of the restored citadel of Salah ad-Din. Pharaoh’s island was the venue of a wonderful surprise party organized by King Hussein for Queen Noor who wrote in her autobiography that it was “an enchanting evening. With the permission of the local Egyptians, my husband had organized an extraordinary buffet dinner and entertainment on a rocky promontory at the base of the fortress, which had loomed majestically since the time of Salahadin, one of the far-flung outposts of his empire. I felt blessed to be surrounded by so many people I loved and I savored that memory for many years to come.”
