Cup of Cultures
Culture and world-class soccer – it is with this combination that the House of World Cultures is getting enthusiastic about the FIFA World Cup. The matches from South Africa will be broadcast from June 11 to July 11 with the motto “Public Viewing, Pop, and Poetry”. Open-air concerts, readings, and performances by African artists will round out the program.
New in Berlin: me Collectors Room
Berlin’s art landscape has now been enriched by one more collection. In the “me Collectors Room”, a specially conceived exhibition house in Berlin’s Mitte district, Thomas Olbricht has recently begun presenting one of the most comprehensive private collections in all of Europe with works from the beginning of the sixteenth century through the most recent contemporary period.
Musical “Cabaret” Back In Berlin
Cabaret”, the finest tribute to the Berlin of the 1930s, is returning to the stage in Berlin. For seven weeks beginning on July 15, the Kit Kat girls, party-girl Sally Bowles, and the shady master of ceremonies will reappear at the Tipi by the Federal Chancellery. The popular musical will be performed again at the end of the year.
Mexico's Mysterious City of Pyramids
Splendidly colorful murals and mysterious stone statues: from July 1 to October 10, the Martin Gropius Bau will present artifacts excavated from the Mexican pyramid city Teotihuacan. For the first time in Europe, this show comprising more than 450 precious articles provides a glimpse into the everyday life, art and religion of this legendary culture.
Chevrolet Underground Catwalk 2010
Fashion Week is going underground. On July 8, the Thursday during Fashion Week, sixteen creative young designers and labels will show the latest works of their “Underground Fashion” in a subway station at Alexanderplatz. Models from the agency Rockstar Models will present varieties of street style ranging from burlesque and gothic to urban.
15th Köpenick Blues & Jazz Festival
From June 25 to September 12, the inner courtyard of the Rathaus Köpenick becomes the backdrop for the “Jazz in Town” festival. More than three hundred performers from fourteen countries will entertain visitors with their musical talents, among them Jon Secada and Curtis Stigers from the US and African-American Berlin resident Jocelyn B. Smith.
Classic Open Air
Classical jewels under the open sky: during the 19th Classic Open-Air Festival, popular melodies and worldwide hits of Italian opera, swing music, and cinema soundtracks will fill the air at the historic Gendarmenmarkt. In addition to famous musicians and orchestras, star soloists Lucia Aliberti and Helen Schneider will perform from July 15 to 19.
Berliner Philharmoniker on the Big Screen
The Berliner Philharmoniker will have its opening concert of the 2010/2011 season broadcast on cinema screens. On August 27, it will be shown live at thirty German movie theaters. And the other news is that you can enjoy high-fidelity, high-definition broadcasts of the Berliner Philharmoniker throughout the year on your home computer via the Digital Concert Hall.
Shopping + Culture: World Heritage in Berlin
Berlin currently has three UNESCO World Heritage sites: Museum Island, the housing estates of Berlin Modernism, and Schloss Glienicke and the Pfaueninsel as part of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation.
