The Tourism Manifesto
|
|
www.bha-online.org.uk The British Hospitality Association have launched their own general election manifesto, calling for an increase in funding for tourism marketing, more support for vocational training in hospitality, improvement in transport infrastructure and greater investment in NHS and schools catering.
The Labour Party Manifesto makes no specific reference to tourism policy, with only the briefest of mentions within a discussion of migration. 'Over seven million people entered the UK from outside the EU in 2003: of whom 180,000 came here to work and over 300,000 to study, with the rest coming here as business visitors and tourists.'
A whole chapter of the manifesto is devoted to culture, art and sport, with discussion of museums, sport, libraries, the BBC and the lottery.
There is no reference to tourism in the main party manifesto, however, the Conservative Party have launched a specific 'Manifesto on Tourism'. This lists 11 key actions including:
- Raising the profile and status of tourism within government and DCMS
- Restructuring RTBs
- Extending VBs remit to include marketing England internationally through England Marketing Advisory Board
- Allocating an additional £10 million per annum to VB for at least 3 years
- Implement recommendations from the Tourism Statistics Improvement Initiative
- Encourage 75% participation in National Quality Assurance Schemes by 2008
The Liberal Democrats refer to tourism in their manifesto under the heading of 'Building Prosperity for Britain'. Along with pledges to cut red tape, scrap the DTI and introduce small business rate relief, the party will 'boost tourism'. 'We will promote domestic tourism opportunities, starting by creating an English Tourism Board to match those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with increased resources for marketing England. These measures will help reduce the 'tourism deficit' - the difference between the amount spent by overseas visitors in the UK and the amount spent by UK tourists abroad - which has quadrupled under Labour and now stands at £17 billion.' |
