www.wissa-wassef-arts.com An exhibition of breathtaking news tapestries for sale will be held at GALLERY 47, 47 Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3PB, 10 November to 22 November 2008, 10am-4pm, (closed Sunday 16 November).
The dazzling tapestries produced by the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre at Harrania near Cairo are world renowned for their gorgeous colour and astonishing detail. These evocative and inspirational depictions of people, places and nature have been acquired by international museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Modern Art, Stockholm and the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, University College, London.
Last autumn's sell-out exhibition of Wissa Wassef tapestries at Gallery 47 was acclaimed by visitors, whose comments included: `Speechless with admiration', ‘Made my heart sing' and `Overwhelmed by their beauty.'
Proceeds from the sale of the tapestries will go to the Art Centre and will help in the restoration of its adobe buildings, which have been severely damaged by a catastrophic rise in the water table. The exhibition features 50 new wool tapestries and 40 cotton weavings, all uplifting visions of Egyptian life in classic Wissa Wassef style, that would make unforgettable Christmas gifts. Prices range from £250 to £4,000.
