Wales at the Arabian Travel Market

Newyddion News 8 May, 2004 The Wales Tourist Board and partners took Wales to the Arabian Travel Market, p from the 4-7 May 2004 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
The Arabian Travel Market is universally recognised as the leading travel industry event for the Middle East and pan Arab region
The Wales Tourist Board was a partner on the VisitBritain stand and was accompanied by Cardiff International Airport and Sartaq Holidays, an incoming operator based in Cardiff.
Roger Pride, Wales Tourist Board marketing director, who represented the Wales Tourist Board at the Travel Market said;
“Currently, less than 10% of Wales’ visitors come from overseas; the potential for growth in this market, however, is huge. If Wales is to capitalize on this potential, then it has to tackle issues of awareness of the country and what it can offer the visitor. In order to do this we need to concentrate on markets which show potential for growth – we’ve identified the Middle East as a market that’s growing in importance.
“Last November 21 operators from the Middle East attended Showcase Wales - a business to business event which was held in Cardiff–we hope that the Arabian Travel Market will provide us with an opportunity to consolidate existing contacts as well as making new onesâ€Â
During 2002 Wales had 17,000 visitors from the Middle East spending £10m while in Wales.
Ismail Khalil of Sartaq Holidays hopes to increase the numbers of visitors to Wales, he said;
“Most visitors from the Middle East come to Wales on a regular basis and have fallen in love with Cardiff and use it as a base to explore further afield. Visitors to the Cardiff area enjoy the green countryside and shoppingâ€Â
Jon Horne, Managing Director of Cardiff International Airport also sees the Travel Market as a means of developing future opportunities; he commented: “Cardiff and Wales is already linked with the Middle East through KLM’s excellent services via its Amsterdam hub, in fact that’s how I am traveling to Dubai myself. However, the potential future growth in this market could mean the development of other services and being at the Arabian Travel Market is key to exploring that potential.â€Â
The Wales Tourist Board is an Assembly Sponsored Public Body, answerable to the Minister for Economic Development and Transport of the Welsh Assembly Government. The Board was set up under the Development of Tourism Act 1969. The role of the Wales Tourist Board is to support the tourism industry and to provide the appropriate strategic framework within which private enterprise can achieve sustainable growth and success, so improving the social and economic well being of Wales.
