www.nst.com FLORA Fest 2007 will be held in Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur from Jan 20 to Feb 4 next year as part of 50 major events for Visit Malaysia Year. The two-week flower festival will include a floral (treasure) hunt, photography competition and exhibition, a grand floral parade, floral decoration competition, floral bazaar and a workshop.
Announcing the event at the Orchid Garden in KL Lake Gardens, Tourism Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the festival will showcase local flowers.
Besides presenting the beauty and splendour of our heritage, it is aimed at boosting the demand for local flowers and to augment the initiative taken by the agriculture sector to enhance the contribution of local flower farmers towards export earnings.
“Besides flowers, the Floral Parade to be held at Persiaran Perdana Putrajaya on Jan 27 will feature local fruit – fresh and carved – as a visual treat.
The highlight will be a convoy of floral decorated floats representing every State government.
Shopping complexes and hotels will participate in a floral decoration contest between Jan 27 and Feb 4 and a panel of judges will select the best decorated shopping mall foyer and hotel lobby.
Malaysia’s Floral Parade was first held in 1991, the first of its kind in South East Asia. “It was inspired by past successes of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade (Pasadena Rose Bowl) in USA where Malaysia’s entry won five prestigious awards since 1988,” said Tengku Adnan.
